Meet the Leadership Team
Dr. Dan Moellenbeck, President
DM Crop Research Group, Inc. was founded in 2002 by Dr. Dan Moellenbeck. Dan leads the agronomy and entomology field and laboratory research programs and provides consulting services. Prior to founding DM Crop Research Group, Inc., Dan worked at Pioneer Hi-Bred International where he developed and coordinated an industry leading research program focused on discovery and development of traits for insect protection and herbicide resistance. The program evolved to provide global regulatory science for insect and herbicide resistant seed products.
Prior to Pioneer, Dan was a Research Scientist with the USDA-ARS Plant Genetics Research Unit in Columbia, MO working on the identification and development of native pest-resistance traits in maize. Dan’s formal education includes a BS in Biometry from Iowa State University and a PhD in Entomology with a minor in Experimental Statistics from Louisiana State University. He is currently an adjunct faculty member of the Department of Entomology at the University of Nebraska and a Board Certified Entomologist as designated by the Entomological Society of America.
Mel Peters, Senior Associate
Mel Peters joined DM Crop Research Group, Inc. in 2010. Mel coordinates our field research activities and works with farmer/cooperators to ensure the quality of our field research sites. Mel has 18 years of experience in the seed and biotechnology industry. Most recently, he worked on the development of transgenic solutions for insect control at Pioneer Hi-Bred. He also has more than 20 years of service with the National Guard, from which he is now retired.
Peter Mahoney, Research Technician
Peter Mahoney, joined our team in the spring of 2012. Peter assists in all phases of our field research activities. We also utilize his construction skills to develop and build our research and seed handling-related equipment and materials. Peter was raised on a dairy farm in Northeast Iowa and attended Des Moines Area Community College. Peter previously worked for Syngenta Seeds in Slater, Ia and Pioneer Hi-Bred in Sheldahl and Boone, Ia.
Amanda Sorgatz, Research Associate
Amanda Hoffmann Sorgatz joined DM Crop in 2013. Amanda coordinates the maintenance of insect colonies for resistance monitoring assays and egg production. Amanda earned her BS and MS in Entomology from Iowa State University. Her MS Thesis studied fitness costs associated with resistance to Bt corn in the western corn rootworm.
Ross Isley, Research Associate
Ross Isley, joined DM Crop in 2013 as a Research Intern and then transitioned to a Full-time Research Associate position. Ross earned a BS in Insect Science from Iowa State University in 2010. Prior to joining DM Crop, Ross was a Lab Technician at both Hach Company and Solum, Inc. in Ames, IA
